Those captivating fight scenes had a great role in making Game of Thrones one of the greatest TV shows ever. Unlike other movies or shows in which the action scenes revolves around a few characters, Game of Thrones has a number of action characters. This is my personal pick of the top 10 fighters in the Game of Thrones series. (based on the TV show, not the book)
10)Tormund Giantsbane
A leader of the free folks, Tormund is a strong and wild man. Cold, rough weather north of the wall made him strong and rough. He is good with an axe rather than a sword. Notable fights: against the nights watch brothers, random fight scenes
9) John snow
The most important character of the series, John snow is certainly not the strongest. But his bravery and willpower make him one of the best swordsmen of Westeros. It doesn’t matter how strong his enemy is, John always stands a chance. Notable fights: Battle of bastards, against Halfhand
8)Brienne of Tarth
The big woman is perhaps the only person who has defeated the hound. When her strength and agility combines, she is an absolute terror to anyone. Notable fights: against the hound, against Bolton soldiers to save Sansa Stark
7)Sandor Clegane aka the hound
Yeah, the big lady defeated him, but he was wounded before the fight. That is why believe he is slightly better than her. He is called the ‘the hound’ perhaps because he is as merciless and ferocious as a hound when it comes to killing. Notable fight: against the mountain in first and last seasons, random fight scenes
6)Jaime Lannister
We have seen Jaime fighting with his right hand only once. That was when he was confronting Ned stark. Ser Jaime dominated the entire combat. His past time achievements are sometimes discussed along the series. he would have been unstoppable if he had not lost his right hand. Notable fight: against Ned stark
5)Dohario Naharis
The lover of Khaleesi, Dohario is perhaps the most versatile fighter in the entire show of GoT. He can fight like a Dothraki blood rider, a sellsword, a cutthroat, a silent Assassin or like a Westerosi knight. Notable fight: (random fights)
4)The mountain
“ The breaker of skulls” is perhaps the most suitable title for him, because he has a habit of breaking his opponent’s skull into pieces. He is the biggest and strongest of all the human characters appearing in the series (except those giants north of the wall ). Notable fight: against the hound, against Oberyn Martell.
3)Oberyn martel
Yeah, the mountain crumbled his skull like an egg. But Oberyn clearly dominated the fight till he made that terrible mistake of not finishing the fight off. The way he moved around the mountain and how he delivered his strikes at him, is quite remarkable. I’ve watched game of thrones more than five times and each time I watch this particular scene, I could sense my heart beating faster.
2)Khal Drago
The most ferocious fighter in the whole show. He was seen fighting only once in the series, when he effortlessly pulls the tongue out through the neck of a fellow Dothraki who challenged him. Imagine how things would have turned if he was not dead early.
- Arya stark
Arya is perhaps the most skilled one among all the warriors (who appeared as main characters) in the game of thrones TV show. She is smart, agile and brave. Arya almost defeated the mighty Brianne of Tarth in their practice bout in episode 04 of season 07 (and we know how good is the big lady). Arya is not just a regular warrior, she is also a deadly assassin. Notable fights: against the white walkers, against the nameless girl of bravos, against Brienne of Tarth.
Some names are still missing here. Like Syrio Forel who came to teach Arya her fighting lessons and that nameless girl of bravos. They both are strong contestants to be on top. But I am skeptical about their identity.
Honourable mentions: Ser barrister Salmy, Grey worm, Loras Tyrell, Jorah Mormont, Ned stark, Bronn of blackwater, Euron Greyjoy, Yara Greyjoy, sands of Dorne and Edmure Tully.
